What Does the Engine Air Filter Do?
In order for your engine to run, it requires air. When you drive, air enters the engine through the air filter into the intake manifold. The air that enters here is distributed to the cylinders and the internal combustion chamber where it is mixed with fuel. This mixture is then ignited by the spark plugs so your engine can get the power it needs from the tiny explosions that occur in the combustion chamber. Your air filter catches impurities like dust, pollen, smog and other airborne particles to ensure that the air entering the combustion chamber is pure so your engine runs more efficiently.
How Often Should I Replace My Air Filter?
An air filter’s job is just that, it filters air — by catching particles in the air. By their very nature, they eventually get dirty and clogged over time. That is when they need to be replaced if air flow is restricted because of debris. An air filter can filter over 10,000 gallons of air for every gallon of fuel. Usually, an air filter needs to be replaced about every 12,000-15,000 miles, but it’s best to check your owner’s manual to read what the manufacturer recommends as the best maintenance schedule for your air filter or any other maintenance procedure.
How Do I Know If My Air Filter Needs to be Replaced?
If you aren’t sure when your air filter was changed last, there are some things to be cognizant of that can clue you into a need for a replacement:
- Difficulty Starting: If your air filter is dirty, it can keep the proper amount of air from entering the combustion chamber; without proper airflow it affects engine efficiency.
- Acceleration Problems: Because a clogged filter can affect the richness of your air to fuel ratio, it means that the chemical reaction that occurs in the combustion chamber is not occurring as rapidly and your engine’s efficiency is affected.
- Filter looks dirty: In modern vehicles, the air filter is found near the engine as a snap off or bolted down plastic housing (Your owner’s manual can confirm the location). If you feel comfortable doing it, you can remove the air filter and check it for yourself. If it is dirty and gray, you need to replace it.
