To optimize the life of your tires, the best practice is to follow the manufacturer recommendations in your owner’s manual. If you do not have an owner’s manual, the usual recommendations are every 5,000 – 7,000 miles. A good rule of thumb to follow for scheduling your rotation is to have your tires rotated every time you get an oil change.
If your vehicle’s wheels are misaligned, it will cause uneven wear to the tread on your tires and lead to early tire replacement. If your vehicle is out of alignment, this issue can cause other mechanical problems that may affect tire performance, mileage, smoothness, and comfort levels whenever you are driving.
Rotation and alignment are not the only things that are necessary to keep your tires from wearing unevenly. You also have to keep your tires in balance to ensure they are wearing correctly. If your wheels are not balanced, not only will you have uneven wear on your tires, but you will also experience higher vibrations and more discomfort when you drive.
If you have a front-wheel drive vehicle, there is a great deal more wear on the front tires, because your braking, steering, and driving forces are all on the front axle. Your rear axle tires get mostly braking forces so the front axle tires will wear much faster than the rear axle tires.
Depending on the vehicle there are different patterns of tire rotation. A regular “modified cross pattern” can be performed on any front wheel drive vehicle or rear wheel drive vehicle. In this rotation pattern, tires are moved from passenger rear to driver front, driver rear to passenger front, and the front tires go from driver front to driver rear and passenger front to passenger rear in front wheel drive vehicles. In rear-wheel-drive vehicles that pattern is reversed. If your tires happen to have directional treads (denoted on the tire sidewall only), these must always be rotated front to rear regardless of the vehicle.
